Overflow Protection

In 2005, at a university in Florida, students at a dormitory figured out how to get new carpet and sometimes new furniture. First, put a paper towel in a red solo cup, the kind you get a keg parties. Second, place the cup in the toilet. Flush the toilet and “accidentally” get the chain stuck. Leave to party for the evening and stay at a friends. Come back the next morning a discover the unfortunate mess in your dorm room….and the room below, and the room below that, etc. More than a dozen a month.

Water Conservation

At least 1 out of 5 toilets leak. Silently up to 500 gallons per day. The EPA says it’s so. The American Water Works Association says it’s so. Numerous studies by state agencies, city authorities and countless water districts say it’s so. A stuck open flapper can waste up to 5000 gallons per day. The EPA says it’s so. The American Water Works Association says it’s so. Lot’s of studies by studies by states , cities and water districts say it’s so.

Students give a lot more thought to English 101 than to simply jiggling the flush handle to stop the water waste or letting the facilities department know about a leaky flapper. We’re not sure what the EPA, the American Water Works Association or states , cities and water districts think about that, but we’ll pick “All the Above” if asked if facilities directors, university presidents, and the university controller think say it’s so. A+
